KC Livestock history given to JCHS
Rich archival materials about the Kansas City Livestock Exchange have been given to the Jackson County Historical Society Archives at year's end.
The materials received included minutes from the Livestock Exchange's Board of Directors meetings from 1886 to 1957 and three gorgeous volumes of photographs of exchange members - all men - totaling 282 portraits.

Wayne City Landing event celebrates Missouri River landing
The history of Wayne City River Landing will be celebrated with a new community festival in Sugar Creek in August.
The festival - August 7-9th, 2014 - will commemorate one of the first riverboat landings west of the Mississippi. Wayne City Landing, also known as the Upper Independence Landing.

JCHS board member James S. “Jimmy” Johnson III died Jan. 13.
He was a longtime educator and re-enactor of African-American life during the Civil War era. He was 66.

Clay County compiles its Civil War graves
Volunteers at the Clay County Archives and Historical Library have completed an impressive task - compiling 812 biographical narratives of Civil War soldiers buried in the county.
Details include their birth and death dates, unit and rank, and place of burial.

JCHS has revived publication of its popular Journal with publication of a 32-page full color issue - the first journal since the spring of 2010.
The journal includes articles about county courthouse, George Caleb Bingham, Kansas City gospel music, a grasshopper plague and several other features.

JCHS receives Truman Heartland gift
The Jackson County Historical Society has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the Truman Heartland Community Foundation to equip the Brady Courtroom for public programming. The courtroom is located in the Truman Courthouse on the Independence Square.
