Independence receives preservation grant
The City of Independence has received a $15,000 preservation grant to survey about 160 late nineteenth to early twentieth century buildings in the North Main Street neighborhood.
The survey will identify historic districts and individual properties that are potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
The North Main neighborhood has long been considered a possible local historic district.
Independence currently has only one historic district (the Truman District) while neighboring communities like Liberty and Kansas City have several local historic districts.
