1859 Old Jail Building Assessment

The JCHS Board decided to undertake an historic building assessment of the 1859 Old Jail and Museum that is owns and located on the Independence Square.

The study was done by Strata Architecture + Preservation.

The detailed report provides detail history of the structure along with recommendations on building maintenance, repairs and preservation.

JCHS intends to use the report to secure funding to implement recommendations made in the report.

The report records the existing conditions and provide future treatment recommendations for the 1859 Jail Museum.

These were developed through field study, conditions assessments, some selective demolition, and limited archival research.

The study provides limited baseline documentation of the building envelope (roof, chimney, drainage, masonry, exterior doors, windows, and trim) and visible building structure, to identify deficiencies, and to develop treatment recommendations for repairing and rehabilitating the building.

While the report primarily focuses on the exterior of the building, a limited assessment of the interior was conducted to identify visible structural concerns and deficiencies which affect the building envelope.

The report is intended to serve as a guide for the long-term care of the building envelope of the Marshal’s Residence, 1859 Stone Jail, and 1907 Jail Addition.
