1859 Old Jail becomes Blue Star Museum

The historic 1859 Old Jail and Museum on the Independence Square is now a Blue Star Museum - a program that provides free admission to active members of the military between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The national program provides families an opportunity to enjoy the nation's cultural heritage and learn more about their community.

Over 2,000 museums nationwide participate.

Other Blue Star Museums in the Kansas City region include the Kansas City, Mo sites Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, The National Museum of Toys and Miniature and the Westport Historical Society and the 1855 Harris-Kearney House Museum and the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm in Olathe.

Blue Star Museums is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense.
