Death on Pleasant Street: A Tale of Murder and Intrigue
The Swope Mansion murders remain one of the most intriguing local history tales in the Kansas City region.
The story is recounted in a book "Death on Pleasant Street: The Ghastly Enigma of Colonel Swope and Doctor Hyde" which is being read by a local book club.
The book by Giles Fowler tells in detail the story of Dr. Hyde and the death of Swope family members living in their Independence mansion.
JCHS reenacted the Swope murder trial in a a well-attended 2010 living history presentation.
Based on information and addresses provided by Fowler, JCHS has produced a map showing key locations related to Hyde and the Swope murders.
