JCHS given signed copy of Bingham print

The Jackson County Historical Society has been given a copy of the George Caleb Bingham engraving "Martial Law" signed by the artist.

This is Bingham's famous mural, which he painted while living in Independence, depicting the devastating affect of "Order No. 11" which directed Kansas City area residents to leave the homes and farms in 1863.

The donation came from the family of John Davis and his wife, the former Mary Margaret Perdee.

The family also provided other historic materials included photographs from the Rockwood Country Club and an oil painting of the family home at 1504 W. Van Horn Road (now Truman Road) which is the current location of The Groves.

More details about the family and the Bingham engraving were written up an August 1977 JCHS Journal article

JCHS executive director Steve Noll traveled to Colorado to pick the engraving and other historic materials from family members.
