Historic Independence home opens new B&B
A Civil War-era historic Greek Revival home in Independence recently opened as a bed and breakfast and is getting lots of attention in the local media.
JCHS Archivist David Jackson wrote a column about the Stone-Gamble Home, located at 1114 S. Noland, in The Independence Examiner based on research done by Audrey Elder and Liana Twente with Past to Present, a local research company specializing in historical Independence properties.
David writes:
"It’s amazing this structure remains today since so many antebellum homes were burned during the Civil War. In fact, Stone was a signer of a declaration of Union support with a promise to 'give no countenance, aid or support, in any manner whatsoever, to any person, combinations of persons or states who are endeavoring by force of arms or otherwise to overthrow the government of the United States or impair its constitutional authority within the limits of our state.'"
The house was also featured in the Kansas City Star along with its new owners Perry and Melanie Johnson who have named the B&B The Silver Heart. It also was featured on Fox 4 news.
