Haunting Memories of the Swope-Hyde Murder Trials

It was in October 1909 when Kansas City lost one of its greatest benefactors, Thomas Hunton Swope, the donor of Swope Park. Mystery and intrigue surround his sudden demise, just days after his cousin died in the same house from the same symptoms. But there are other eerie details to convey as we re-visit these untimely deaths, and the three murder trials that ensued. Author Giles Fowler—and former Kansas City Star writer--is currently preparing a book about this interesting and fascinating chapter in Kansas City’s history. Giles visits today to provide attendees with a preview of what’s to come! Jackson County (Mo.) Historical Society collaborates with Kansas City Public Library, to bring you this presentation as part of the Library’s Missouri Valley Speakers Series. Plaza Branch, 2 p.m. FREE and open to the public. More details to follow.
