On the Other Side of Freedom
Local historian Joelouis Mattox takes a broad look at the struggle
for racial equality in America
During the January lead-up to Black History Month, many African-Americans
honor and praise those who have advocated for their rights and remember those
who led them on the sojourn to "The Promised Land." However, many
do not know the great numbers of white people who were on the side of freedom
and the important roles played by Presidents Washington, Lincoln, and Truman.
Mattox is an independent scholar at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage
Center and majored in history and government at Lincoln University of
Missouri. Kansas City Public Library, Southeast Branch

John Brown, Kansas, and the Raid That Brought on the Civil War
Almost 150 years after his death, the abolitionist John Brown remains among
the most controversial figures in American history. His ultimately disastrous
1859 raid on Harper's Ferry in Virginia helped ignite the Civil War and
established his reputation as both fiend and prophet. Historian Jonathan
Earle says Brown's Border War experiences in Kansas and Missouri are key to
understanding the Harper's Ferry raid. Earle also contends those experiences
as a Jayhawker transformed his abolitionist beliefs to such an extent that
Brown saw violence as inevitable in the anti-slavery struggle. This
presentation is part of the Missouri Valley Speakers Series, a program of the
Missouri Valley Special Collections at the Central Library. The series is
made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the
Humanities. Kansas City Public Library, Plaza Branch, 4801 Main
St. (816-701-3481). FREE. Reservations are recommended; call 816.701.3407 to

6:30 Program
An Evening with Walt Disney
In association with the Once Upon A Time fairy tale exhibit on display at
the Central Library, historian Dr. Bill Worley will channel the 20th
century's foremost creator of fairy tales with a portrayal of Walt Disney.
Disney's early years as a professional artist can be traced to Kansas City
and stand as the foundation of his brilliant career. From 1919-23, Disney
worked for the Pesmen-Rubin Commercial Art Studio and the Kansas City Slide
(later the Kansas City Ad) Company before striking out on his own as animator
and founder of Laugh-O-Gram Films, Inc., located at 1127 E. 31st St. in
Kansas City. Though the studio went bankrupt after being locked into a
distribution controversy, it introduced many of Disney's classic characters
to the world. Kansas City Public Library, Central Library
(816-701-3400), 14 W. 10th St. FREE; Reservations are recommended; call
816.701.3407 to secure a seat. For more information, contact the Library via.
