Jackson County
Historical Society
Internship
Opportunities
Thank you in advance for your interest in an internship opportunity with the Jackson County Historical Society. The Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation and understanding of the County’s heritage, and promotes the study, appreciation and interpretation of local and regional history. In collaboration with college and university academic advisors and professors, the Historical Society is determined to engage interns by introducing them to all the facets of the Jackson County Historical Society's work, which encompasses to one degree or another, all four aspects of "historic preservation" (i.e., archives studies, museum studies, living history/historic site management, and architectural restoration). The internship opportunities are one component of a comprehensive educational outreach program. Click here for more information about the Historical Society’s educational resources. JCHS operates an archive, research library, and bookshop
located in the historic Courthouse on Independence Square. JCHS also owns and operates the 1859
Jail, Marshal’s Home and Museum, located at 217 North Main in
Independence. The JCHS staff includes professionals with educational
background and experience in museum and archival collection management,
historical research, exhibits, and program development. Staff members are capable of offering
substantive training and mentoring to students and volunteers who perform a
variety of tasks for the Society.
The Historical Society’s sites house substantial numbers
of artifacts, documents, photographs, films and negatives. Every effort is made to document and
protect these unique collections using the best in collection care
standards. The Society seeks
interns to assist with ongoing computerization projects, as well as other
collection processing projects, exhibits, and program development. Students studying History, Museum or Archives
Management, Material Culture, Historic Preservation, Education or related
fields will find the experience of interning with the Historical Society
beneficial. Internship
relationships prove to be beneficial for both the students and the Historical
Society. Interns have the opportunity to complete significant projects, and
receive valuable professional experience working with the Historical Society
staff and volunteers. Intern positions with the Jackson County Historical
Society are not currently monetarily reimbursable. Students obtain academic credit hours for a prescribed
number of on-site hours at the Historical Society’s sites. Fulfillment requirements of a
prospective internship are discussed between the student, professor or
academic advisor, and Historical Society staff when arranging internship
coursework. Work schedules are generally flexible to accommodate student’s
needs. For
