Jackson County Historical Society Recent Acquisitions
Consider
donating to the Jackson County Historical Society We have been collecting historical materials through generous donations for more than 60 years. The Society’s Archives, located in the historic Jackson County Courthouse in Independence, Missouri, occupies roughly 3,200 square feet storage space. A 2,000-volume library contains non-circulating reference books and periodicals relating to Jackson County, Missouri, history. The records in the Society’s
Archives date from 1826, the year that Jackson County, Missouri, was
organized. These documents tell the
stories of the daily lives of people who witnessed the westward traffic
during the early trail days, who suffered through fierce Civil War battles,
who benefited (or not) from Tom Pendergast’s political machine, who cheered
their neighbor when he became the 33rd President of the United
States, who welcomed their Mormon neighbors back to the area after earlier
conflict, who built towns that grew to cities. The original documents of pioneer families, some of which describe the journey west itself, represent the County’s earliest period. Records of clubs and fine arts organizations that our citizens have fostered reveal our community’s social and cultural evolution. Two exciting developing collections include our Women’s History and African-American Heritage series. The collections of local leaders and entrepreneurs help document our area’s political and economic growth. Equally important are corporate records that document the business activities of the extensive financial empires founded in Jackson County, Missouri. The types of records are as varied as the topics contained therein: city and telephone directories, historical property abstracts, personal manuscripts, genealogical indexes, maps, plats and atlases, business ledgers, post cards, newspapers, subject files, photographs, school records, scrapbooks, probate records, periodicals, diaries and letters, and yearbooks. We have the capability and capacity to properly preserve Jackson County-related family documents and photographs...and make them available to an interested public INTO THE FUTURE. Consider establishing a collection in your or your family’s name for posterity! I have something I
