Recent donations to the Jackson County, Missouri, Historical Society

 

The Jackson County Historical Society is grateful to the people who support its mission to collect, preserve and make available to the public, materials that document Jackson County, Missouri’s rich history.  Since January 2003, the Society has accepted more than 110 donations into its collections.  Some collections consist of one folder and others are several boxes. Real estate papers for NW 1/4 of Section 5,Township 49, Range 30, and probate/estate papers from the Edward J. Owen and Alma and Sebetha A. Owen estates.

Miscellaneous historical papers from the collection of Joanne Eakin, including a Civil War-era description of the Battle of Lone Jack.  Also included are files once belonging to Fred Lee, which donor acquired at his death.

American flag and accompanying certificate presented to the Independence Young Matrons by the U.S. Army Task Force Corsair, at Kandahar Army Airfield in Afghanistan, in appreciation for a generous care package the organization sent to the troops during the Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan during the 2002 holiday season.

15 mounted black-and-white images taken by Madelene and Edward J. Mills for competition in the Independence Camera Club between 1948-1955.  Images are primarily of Jackson County scenes including: the American Royal, Missouri River flooding, Unity Village, Loose Park, the 1827 Log Courthouse, Cement City and the Standard Oil Company Refinery at Sugar Creek, Missouri.  Also included are three images of the United Nations in New York.  Prints are well labeled, including the date, type of film and developer, and have artist's numbers 16-20; 25-26; 72; 77-80; and 84-86.

4 commercial sewing machine attachments specially modified and used by donor's wife, Ruth Swetnam, who was a long-time Donnelly Garment Company employee. Mrs. Swetnam's primary occupation was a hemmer for Nelly Don fashions.  She had a mechanic engineer the attachments from her own designs.  Although she never patented her specialized attachments, these tools made her work as a seamstress easier and much more efficient. 

Black-and-white prints and negatives taken by donors' father, Decatur Clark "Dick" Millard Sr., who, in 1909 began his career as a Kansas City photographer (or "pictorialist" as he self-proclaimed).  Both commercial and "pleasure" photography are represented.  Commercial work represented include various mechanical and customer service operations of Transcontinental and Western Air, Inc. (TWA), ca. 1940s and 1950s.  Images are of exteriors and interiors of TWA airplanes, their components (i.e., radios and other equipment), personnel (from flight attendants, pilots and dispatchers), passengers, aerial photographs of TWA airplanes in-flight, and various airports (i.e. Wichita and Albuquerque). Mr. Millard's "pleasure" work include various scenes taken in and around Kansas City from the 1930s, plus an oversized 1968 calendar produced by GLENN Inc. titled, A Tribute to an Artist: Dick Millard, that includes 12 of Mr. Millard's favorite images with background information.  Proviso: Dick Millard's direct descendants may procure reprints of selected images for personal use at cost.

Bauer, George R. Century of Kansas City Aviation History, A: The Dreamers and the Doers. (Historical Preservation Press, 1999).

The Papers of Ona Gieschen documenting her air hostess/inflight career with Kansas City-based Transcontinental and Western Air, Inc.--Trans World Airlines after May 17, 1950--(TWA) from January 7, 1946 to August 1, 1988.  Included in the collection are various designer uniforms issued to and used by the donor between 1960 and 1978; two photographs; and, two 16mm reel-to-reel films, as described in the inventory attached to the Deed of Gift.  Additional complementary materials will be transferred at a later date, including photographs, books, and donor's hostess and inflight uniforms, training materials
and related papers dating from 1946.

Images used in the publication of the book Legacy of Leadership: A Pictorial History of Trans World Airlines.  Mr. McGrogan was Senior Ground School Instructor, TWA Flight Operations Training, who collated the material contained in the book. 

One white oval serving platter once used at the McCune Home for Boys, owned and operated by Jackson County, Missouri.  The platter has the County seal around the outside top-facing edge, and the year 1930.  "McNichol China; Clarksburg, W.Va." is stamped on the underside of the platter.

One long, narrow black and white class photo of the Kansas City Chapter, Order de Molays, January 29, 1921.  This photograph is donated in memory of donor's father, Manuel Atwell, born in Jackson County, Missouri, in 1920. His father, Willard Atwell, was also involved with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  The Atwells moved to Colorado in 1948.

Mr. Truman's Home Town, Independence, Missouri. Set of 20 art prints of Sidney Moore water color paintings depicting historic structures in Independence, including: Krister Home, Old Spring, Bartholomew Home, Watering Trough and 1879 Courthouse, Overfelt-Johnson Home, Woodson-Sawyer Home, 1859 Jackson County Jail, Sawyer Jennings Home, McCoy-Ingram Home, Ripley Covered Bridge, Ott School, Blue Mill, Gregg-Childers Home, Bingham Studio, Arnold Home, McCurdy Blacksmith Shop, Wayne City Railroad Depot and Warehouse, Vaile Mansion, Swope Mansion, and the Truman Home.

Copy set of 29 black-and-white images of Kansas City fire stations taken in February 1913.

One letter written to Mrs. Mark S. Salisbury (then State Regent of the Missouri DAR) from Frank A. Davis (from the National Old Trails Road Association in Kansas City), August 26, 1927; one reminder card pre-printed from Mrs. Salisbury regarding the Daniel Boone-Rebecca Bryan marker; and, one letter and transcription of the life of Daniel Boone, as described in the Bryan Rose History copied by Marcia Williams in 1915 and sent to Mrs. Salisbury.

Framed portraits and scenes of early Kansas City regional history by noted artist and muralist, Charles Goslin, ca. 1960s.  The set of art includes 21 (24" x 20") dry brush ink drawings of the following individuals: William Bent; Daniel Morgan Boone; James Bridger; John Brown; George Catlin; Fracois Chouteau; William Clark; Kearsey Coates; William Frederick Cody; Samuel R. 4 Jackson County high school year books.

"The Golden School Days" memoir and autograph book of Marian (Nagel) Sudbrock, 1923 William Chrisman High School graduate.  In 1906, Marian and her parents Gottlieb and Ida Nagel, along with her siblings, moved to Jackson County and settled on a farm on what is now U. S. Highway 40, about a mile west of the intersection with Noland Road. She married Borden B. Sudbrock in 1952; each had a career at the Independence, Mo., U.S. Post Office.

Woodlawn Cemetery  deed and accompanying certification from the Independence, Mo., city clerk for Joseph Solden Els, Lot 5, Block 32.

A complete set of the organization's A Celebration of Women commemorative women's journals, December 1993 through May 2003, honoring and celebrating the lives of more than 1,500 women in the Kansas City metropolitan region for their outstanding contributions to helping the women and girls of Kansas City.

Cornuele, Herbert C. Mr. Anonymous. Reprint of the 1951 Caxton Press printing by the Junior Women's Symphony Alliance. (Shawnee Mission, Ks.: Fowler Printing, 2003).  Junior Women's Symphony Alliance Designer Showhouse official program books XXIV (24) to XXXIV (34), 1993-2003.  These 4-color program guide books are special or bonus issues of the Kansas City Homes and Gardens magazine, and serve as a personal guide through each of the Designer Showhouses.  Designer Showhouse booklets from previous years (1970-1992) were delivered previously to the Jackson County Historical Society.

Kansas City Centennial Scrapbook of Mrs. Charles Channing Allen, 1921, including clippings, letters and drawings of the local arrangements and celebration of Missouri's Centennial.

Copy of The History of John Grey and Mary Ann Charles Grey by Josephine McDaniel Connelly (re: early French in Kansas City).  Donor's wife, Ann Harrington is a 5th great granddaughter of John Grey through his daughter Cecilia.

Time capsule of the Safety Committee for the Missouri Portland Cement Company, 1934, including: a large, rolled document on parchment-type paper with signatures of company employees; 13 copies of The Red Ring Record, the monthly newsletter of the Safety Department of the Independence plant of the Missouri Portand Cement Company; a No-Accident Legion membership card issued to W. H. Harle; a Safety Honor Roll card issued to C. E. McCormick from the Repair Department; 2 safety buttons; and, 7 black-and-white photographs, mostly of officer/employees. The copper box used as the time capsule was returned to the company for safe-keeping. Separately, two albums of the Missouri Portland Cement Company and one book by the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines titled, Lime and Cement Resources of Missouri (1907), include images and information about the Independence plant.

Miscellaneous two- and three-dimensional exhibitable items relating to the Katz Drug Company in Kansas City, Mo., including: a leather baseball mit "exclusively made for Katz;" a wooden/natural bristle shoe shining brush with company advertising "Everything for Less" carved into the handle; safety film cartridge boxes; prescription bottle and an empty Rx notepad of Dr. P. A. Scollick; an ironstone soda fountain serving dish and two cups, plus one plastic Kiddie Plate; empty box of Katz Chocolate Cherries; a free sample of bobby pins "compliments of Katz Drug Company;" and printed items relating to Katz' annual "famous million dollar sale." Also included are various souvenir booklets for Katz Drug Co. Night with the Kansas City Blues (at Blues Stadium), and Katz annual philharmonic concert programs, 1948-1067.

Two "Notes and Drawings" books of Miss Caroline and Mary Southern's English Class at Independence (Central) High School, 1909-1910; and one copy of A Boy's Unquenchable Thirst by Susan B. Chiles and Caroline S. Carnes (a historical novel based on the life of Alexander Procter for the Bicentennial Committee of the First Christian Church, Independence, Mo.).

Papers of the Westport Ballet Theater documenting the activities and events of the theater from 1974 to 1997, including: Articles of Incorporation, Board minutes, correspondence, theatrical programs, publicity materials, and photographs.

Approximately 3 cubic feet of newspaper clipping files collected by the donors that identify local events of historical significance from the mid-1960s to present.

Brewster, Lois Anne. Brewster Gold: The Story of A Brewster Family in America, 1825-1996 (Leawood, Ks.: Leather's Publishing, 2003).

Simmons, Les. 1943 Memories for Our 60th Reunion, Buckner High School Class of 1943, June 21, 2003.

Gary Plowman Collection of P.H. Grinter Photographic Portraits containing sitting cards and negatives from the former studios of not only P. H. Grinter and his son, but also selected images from their successor, H. Tupper Smith studio. The collection is currently in poor condition and lacks sufficient organization to make it accessible.  As time and budget allow, the Society will process this collection to make it available to the public. The donor acknowledges that this collection is incomplete as many negatives have been damaged over the years. This donation does not contain the original scenic, or non-portrait, images from the Grinter Studio, which the donor has retained at this time.

DeLaurier, Nancy. St. Paul's Westport: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Kansas City, Missouri. (Leawood, Ks.: Leather's Publishing, 2003).

Typescript of the World War II Diary of Clayton Henry "Clay" Iott that covers the period from July 1, 1944 to October 27, 1945, when he was aboard the U.S.S. SC1363 (Task Unit 116 15.3) before being transferred to the ATF 134, U.S.S. Achomowie and other vessels. Underway from Treasure Island, San Francisco, California, Iott toured throughout the Pacific Islands including Hawaii, Ulithi, Solomon, Peleliu, Angaur, Guam, Roi, Okinawa, and others. He was recruited as a photographer in the Navy's Public Relations department, where he was responsible for photodocumenting and writing about the occupationof Okinawa.  A few of Mr. and Mrs. Iott's personal photographs, letters, poems, and associated documents have been duplicated in this compilation. A much more complete collection of World War II-related papers--as well as Iott's orignial diary--is retained by the family at this time.

One Abstract of Title for property in Jackson County, Missouri, Section 26, Township 49, Range 33, Eastwood Hills subdivision, Lot 46.

Ancestral Records of the Hyde Family Collected and Prepared by James L. Hyde, 1994, for the Benefit of His Daughters Mary Hyde Munkenbeck, Lucy Hyde Jounson, and Dorothy J. Hyde. James L. Hyde was the only surviving son of Bennett Clark and Frances Hunton (Swope) Hyde. This compilation includes genealogical materials relating to the Hyde, Chrisman, Swope, Lee, Clark, Swanton and other related families, plus copies of two notebooks handwritten by Bennett Clark Hyde between 1915 and 1917 "collected in order that his son, now an infant, may become informed concerning his ancestry when he reaches maturity." The notebooks detail the family's ancestry, and also relay his contested elopement with Frances Hunton Swope and later accusation of murder by his mother-in-law because she "had neither the disposition nor character to become reconciled to or forget this defeat of her aims."

Items from the Railway Express Agency (REA), including a small selection of memoriabila. Photographs from the late 1930s and early 1940s depict workers and fleet at the Kansas City Union Station railway terminal, including several women who worked for REA during WWII. The REA 65ers Club was a retiree group organized from 1960 to about 1999, of which the donor was president since 1995.  Club rosters from the mid-1980s, plus a chronological listing of officers is also included in this collection.

Tharp, James A., MA, MLIS. Commercial Photographers in Jackson County, Missouri, and Wyandotte County, Kansas, 1850s to 1925 (Lee's Summit, December 2003), a 109-page composite listing of the "Photographers" classified entries that appeared in city directories for Kansas City, Independence, and Lee's Summit, Missouri, and for Kansas City, Argentine, Rosedale, and Wyandotte, Kansas, from their earlies editions to 1925. Research materials (i.e., U.S. Census schedules, printed biographies, and classified advertisements) are also included. Additionally, a collection of original, largely unidentified photographs taken by Jackson County, Missouri, photographers, as collected by James A. Tharp consists of 295 photographs (53 CDs; 191 Cabinets; 51 Other) representing 75 photographers. The donor plans to include a more indepth study of D.P. Thomson and his predecessors William I. Williams and John C. Merine at a later date; 91 of the photographs already donated are from Thomson's studio.
