Jackson County (Mo.) Historical Society
150th
Anniversary (Sesquicentennial) of the 1859 Jail
and Marshalls’ Home Friday, June 5th
through Sunday, June 7th Independence
Square Honorary
Co-Chairs Barbara Potts
and Mary Shaw Branton The 1859 Jackson County Jail and
Marshal’s Home in Independence, Missouri, represents one of the nation’s most
authentic portrayals of life on the frontier and America’s political,
geographic, and social evolution. Visitors
to site gain insight into the experience of life in pre-Civil War Missouri
through three dimensional displays, exhibits and a rare first-hand look at
the lifestyle typical of the era. A destination for school groups from
across the Midwest, local visitors, and tourists, the museum greets 6,500
guests each year, making it a popular and profitable Jackson County tourism
destination. In 1956 a spontaneous act of civil
disobedience saved the “Old Jail” from sure destruction. Prompted by an anonymous caller, members of
the Independence Junior Service League, the Jaycees, the Independence Young
Matrons and other community leaders proactively staged a peaceful
demonstration to ensure that this important historic landmark was preserved
for the enjoyment and education of thousands of visitors. Support of the three-day
sesquicentennial celebration will allow JCHS to sustain and expand its
mission of historic preservation and education to students, visitors, and
patrons of the 1859 Jail and Marshal’s Home and the Archives and Research
Library. Underwriting Opportunities Legacy
