Veterans History
Project
HELP US COLLECT WARTIME MEMORIES! There
are almost 19 million veterans living in the United States. And we lose almost 1,500 every
day. Imagine the lost stories, memories,
and lessons that could benefit this generation and those to come. The
Historical Society invites you to participate as an interviewer in the
Veterans History Project so that the personal experiences of veterans is
collected and preserved for future generations. Interviewing is not difficult
and can be a great deal of fun!
To help you get started the Jackson County Historical Society conducts
one-hour training sessions around the metropolitan area. Congress
created the Veterans History Project at the American Folklife Center in the
Library of Congress on October 27, 2000. The project collects audio and video
recorded interviews, as well as letters, diaries, photographs, and other
personal documents, from veterans who served in all wars, as well as
civilian volunteers and wartime industry workers. The
Jackson County Historical Society is registered as an official “partner
archive.” This
means that Veterans History Project interviews of local residents (and any
associated memorabilia) will remain and be properly preserved and made
available locally in the Historical Society’s Archives and Research
Library. Information
about local interviews is included on the Library of Congress’ national
database. U.S. Representative
Karen McCarthy, cosponsor of the legislation, feels that the Veterans History
Project, “will bring families together, stimulate the interest of our
students, introduce us to our veteran neighbors, and ultimately provide a
deeper appreciation for our veterans.”
Let’s join together to honor our veterans “who sacrificed with their
service by having their story preserved for future generations through the
lasting gift of capturing living history.” In addition to a staff of dedicated volunteer interviewers, the Jackson County Historical Society is proud to be working in collaboration with: Mr.
Gary Swanson at American’s Remembered, Inc., Raytown
Historical Society, Raytown Shepherd’s Center, Lee’s
Summit Senior’s Center, and City
of Independence Parks and Recreation Department (who are not only
interviewing, but have installed a fabulous Veterans Hall in the Truman
Memorial Building).
