JCHS Extends Two Exhibits

The Jackson County Historical Society is pleased to extend two popular exhibits featuring different facets of Jackson County History.   Jackson County’s Mormon History and 175 Years of Jackson County History will continue on display through September 10, 2002.

Only a few hundred known copies remain of the first edition Book of Mormon, and the Jackson County Historical Society retains one in their collection.  This and other artifacts related to the Latter Day Saints’ history in Jackson County will be on display at the 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home & Museum located at 217 North Main Street in Independence, MO.

The Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, and the 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home & Museum, will also continue hosting the exhibit 175 Years of Jackson County History, each featuring a different era of Jackson County’s past.  Photographs, artifacts and textual information provide an informative view into some of the personalities and events that shaped our fascinating history.

Hours for the Jail Museum are 10 – 4:30 p.m. Monday–Saturday, and 1–4 p.m. on Sundays.  Admission is $4, adults, $3.50, seniors and $1 for youth six – 16, free 6 and under.  The site can be reached at (816) 252-1892.

Bruce R. Watkins, located at 3700 Blue Parkway, Kansas City, Missouri 64130, is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.  The center is closed Sunday and Monday.   Admission is free to Bruce R. Watkins.

The Jackson County Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation and understanding of its county’s heritage and will promote the study, appreciation and interpretation of local and regional history.
