Jackson County (Mo.) Historical Society Submitting
Materials for Publication in the Society’s JOURNAL (3/07) The
JOURNAL is the semi-annual journal of the Jackson County Historical
Society. It explores Jackson
County, Missouri, history through enlightening and reflective articles about
the County’s 1826 origins and subsequent evolution; about the people who
lived and worked to make their communities a better place; and about the
common and uncommon events that shaped its history. It seeks to provide a broad insight into the county’s
civic, social, cultural, economic, and educational development. The
JOURNAL’s scholarly approach is directed primarily toward adults. To reach a broad and diverse
audience, the use of print and on-line technology are incorporated into each
issue of the JOURNAL. Content in
the JOURNAL is usually, but not always, derived from research into primary
documents available at the Jackson County Historical Society’s Archives and
Research Library. Those
interested in local, Missouri state, and regional histories are invited to subscribe
and contribute to the JOURNAL. Thank you in advance for supporting the efforts of the
Jackson County Historical Society to collect, preserve, catalog, interpret,
and make available for research, exhibition and education those primary
source materials relating to Jackson County’s rich history and culture. Authors
contributing to the JOURNAL do so without financial remuneration. Material
printed in the Jackson County Historical Society JOUNRNAL becomes copyrighted
by the organization. However, authors may expect continued use of their own
work without restriction or permission. The
JOURNAL will not consider a manuscript that is simultaneously being reviewed
by another publication, nor will it normally consider an article that
has been published previously in an exact form. The JOURNAL editor
reserves the discretionary right to consider submissions on a case-by-case
basis. Submissions
may be edited for space and clarity. Original manuscript content submitted
for possible inclusion in the JOURNAL—whether used or unused in
publication—may be filed in the Society’s permanent files for future research
purpose. JOURNAL
submissions vary by type and length (full-length features, short articles,
and book reviews), and generally comply with these basic guidelines: Content ·Â Be
clear and concise; focus on positive outcomes if the topic relates to a
challenging situation. ·Â Accurately
document sources in bibliographic form at the end of the manuscript [consult Chicago
Manual of Style, 14th Edition (University of Chicago, 1993)];
acquire permission in advance to publish or reproduce copyrighted materials. ·Â Include
at the end of the manuscript specific examples of on-line sources for
additional information (exact URLs). ·Â Include
at the end of the manuscript a two- to three-sentence paragraph “about the
author.” ·Â Supply
photocopies of suggested images (photographs, illustrations, etc.) to
accompany the story. If the
manuscript is accepted for publication, the author will be asked to lend
originals for reproduction at the appropriate time. Format ·Â Length
is flexible; anywhere from three to fifteen 8 ½" X 11" numbered
pages. If an article is longer, we may work with the author to provide a
shortened version of
the original manuscript, and then direct readers to the full-length
article on file in our Archives and Research Library. ·Â Left-justified,
double-spaced, typed, 12-point font size text. ·Â Include
author’s name, complete postal and e-mail addresses, and phone and fax
numbers, whenever available. Send To E-mail
questions and/or proposed articles to the JOURNAL editor. (Copy/paste
text either in the body of the e-mail, or attach as a Microsoft Word document). Sample
issues available on request.
Manuscripts received will be acknowledged promptly and production
schedule discussed at that time. |
