Jackson
County 175th Anniversary Honor Roll In Spring 2001, local media helped the Jackson County
Historical Society solicit from the public a list of names…people who, in the
course of Jackson County’s history, met personal and social challenges to
make positive contributions to Jackson County. Over the summer we received nominations of people who
exemplified the theme of triumphing over challenge as they helped our county
(and our country) to evolve into the land we know today. The Jackson County Historical Society’s staff, Board of
Directors, and a special 175th Anniversary planning committee have
since been working in-tandem with County Executive Katheryn Shields and her
staff to pare the list down to 175 names. This was no easy task because there are easily thousands
of individuals deserving attention.
Realizing this, we present this honor roll as one
attempt to raise an awareness of the importance of documenting our own
individual contributions to American history. These 175 people are representatives
of the spirit and initiative in every one of us. They come from across the spectrum of human experience
and include people who have contributed to education, philanthropy,
government and politics, religion, business, community activism, health care,
culture and sports. They
represent men and women of many races and ethnicity who resided in all
corners of our county. Some were
early settlers, and others are alive and contributing today. The JOURNAL proudly presents the Jackson County 175th
Anniversary Honor Roll.
