Historical Society Faces Challenges

of Promoting and Preserving HerStory

The Autumn 2001 JOURNAL of the Jackson County Historical Society features Historical Society Faces Challenges of Promoting and Preserving HerStory by Janice Lee.

Those researching the history of noteworthy local women have found it a piecemeal task in the past: a scrap of information here, another there, but rarely a comprehensive source to be found.

In an interview with David Jackson, Director of Archives and Education for the Jackson County Historical Society, Lee explores how the Jackson County Historical Society is working to overcome the challenges of preserving the stories of Jackson County women.  It’s not rocket science, but it takes time and dedication; volunteers and interns really help us get much accomplished.

Specific suggestions on how individuals may preserve documents and artifacts relating to women are available in the print version of the JOURNAL.

Janice Lee lives in Kansas City and is currently working as an archival consultant for the Missouri Historical Records Grant Program, preparing National Register of Historic Places nominations, and doing oral history interviews for the History Speaks project. In her spare time she’s engaged in an ongoing project of restoring her 94-year-old house, a.k.a. the “Money Pit Maison.”
